"The long Labor Day weekend seems to like a distant memory now that mid September is just about here and the school year is in full swing. With kids back in the classroom, it's time to focus on academics and making the grade. In terms of real estate, access to quality public schools is a huge contributor to the the value of a home. A Fox Business article says that being in a strong school district can put up to a 25% premium on a house. Similarly, houses with access to quality schools sell faster, even in this downturn. The Wall Street Journal wrote last year about how communities with solid school districts seemed to weather the housing fall much better than others.

While it makes sense to pay more to get into a neighborhood with a strong school district, parents need to pay attention and do their homework as well. Schools that may have been on a slight down trend or if the community could undergo a re-zoning could put a quick barrier to that quality education you've been hoping for.
